New York Jets Unexpectedly Fire GM Mike Maccagnan: Twitter Reacts

On Wednesday, the New York Jets fired their vice president of player personnel, Brian Heimerdinger and the team's longtime General Manager Mike Maccagnan.

NY made the borderline shocking announcement Tuesday that it fired general manager Mike Maccagnan as well as VP of player personnel Brian Heimerdinger. Oakland did something similar when it hired draft expert Mike Mayock away from NFL Media to be the team's general manager.

Douglas began his National Football League scouting career in Baltimore, where he won two Super Bowl rings working under legendary GM Ozzie Newsome. I will start a search for our new General Manager immediately.

Both announcements were made by team chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson. "However, I came to the decision to make a change after much thought and a careful assessment of what would be in the best long-term interests of the New York Jets". "And that's all we've done since we've been here", Gase said over the weekend when asked about a potential rift between him and Maccagnan. For what it's worth, Gase later downplayed the reports. The Jets hired him 12 days later. I don't know who decides that and gets to put that stuff out there, it kind of pisses me off a little bit because we have discussions on everything and that's our job. According to ESPN, Maccagnan also had a significant role in initially hiring Gase, which only makes the move more shocking. Maccagnan, who was hired as GM in 2015, was not relieved of his duties this past offseason when coach Todd Bowles was sacked. Safety Jamal Adams and defensive lineman Leonard Williams are also recent draft picks by Maccagnan who have become building blocks for the defense.

If Maccagnan were going to lose this power struggle in the end, it goes without saying it would've been better for the Jets to realize that months ago before making those signings and moving forward with the draft.

Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas is believed to be a primary candidate to replace Maccagnan.
