From Marvel to Lucasfilm, Disney has major plans for their upcoming streaming service. The Mandalorian will be the first ever live-action Star Wars series, which will premiere alongside the Disney+ launch in November.
How do you feel about a Benioff and Weiss Star Wars?
Disney recently announced release dates for three untitled Star Wars movies that don't get released until years after Star Wars: Rise of the Skywalker, starting in 2022. Iger wouldn't comment on what their film will be about, when it will be set, or any additional details about its production. "The next movie that we release will be theirs", said Iger, talking about Weiss and Benioff.
Despite the end nearing for the primary saga of the long-running sci-fi film franchise Star Wars, Disney CEO Bob Iger not only announced today that the next three Star Wars films are the in-development projects from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, but that there may also be a third live-action TV series extension of the franchise in the works.
"[We thought] it would be smart for us to take a bit of a hiatus while we figure out what's next".
"We're hard at work doing that already", he said.
Following the 2022 movie, the next Star Wars movies will come out in 2024 and 2026. It's amusing that Iger is basically like, "we have so much money, sure, we'll probably make another Star War".
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - aka Episode IX - hits theaters December 20.
Iger said he hasn't seen the finished Rise of Skywalker yet, but he expects it will be extremely popular. They're set to alternate with James Cameron's planned Avatar sequels, which start in 2021 and are expected to continue every other year through 2027.
The first series is entitled The Mandalorian, which Jon Favreau is shepherding, with the second untitled show said to be a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, following Diego Luna's Cassian Andor.
