This year's annual observance is going with the theme "Doing It My Way".
BURTON, MI- People who receive HIV testing on June 27 will be entered into a gift card drawing in recognition of National HIV Testing Day.
National HIV Testing Day is part of an ongoing effort by Greater Than AIDS and Walgreens to broaden the reach of HIV testing and information in non-traditional settings and help people understand the latest in HIV prevention, treatment and care.
The goal of the campaign is to identify people who don't know they are HIV positive so they can access treatment. In the United States, almost 1.1 million people are living with HIV, and one in seven don't know they are infected.
If anyone has had unprotected sex with someone who uses injectable drugs, ever shared needles, or if they are a man who has ever had sex with another man, or if they have other factors that put them at risk for HIV infection, they should consider getting an HIV test. Free condoms, games and prizes will be available to everyone.
"The most common way HIV is transmitted in IN is through sexual contact between an infected partner and a noninfected partner, followed by intravenous drug use", Teresa Krupka, Infectious Disease Nurse at HCHD, said. A pregnant women also can pass the virus to her child.
"HIV testing is the essential entry point to a continuum of prevention, health care and social services that are central to managing HIV and promoting health among all people living with HIV", said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, MDHHS chief medical executive and chief deputy director for health.
All Walgreen testing clinics will be open from 10 a.m.to 7 p.m. on Thursday.
