Atletico Madrid to contest Barcelona's signing of Antoine Griezmann

- When does the 2019-20 La Liga season start?

The La Liga champions confirmed they paid his full buyout clause to release the forward from his deal at Atletico Madrid. The two clubs met in Madrid last Thursday, but it quickly became apparent that Atletico would not accept a payment plan.

Though, it was only announced on Friday with Barcelona paying Griezmann's €120million release clause.

Barcelona's acquisition of Griezmann made him the sixth most expensive signing in history behind Ousmane Dembele, Joao Felix, Philippe Coutinho, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar. Atletico claim they are due €80m more, because they feel the agreement between Barcelona and Griezmann predates the reduction in the buyout clause.

"Atlético de Madrid believes that the amount deposited is insufficient to meet its release clause since it is obvious that the commitment of the player and the Football Club Barcelona was closed before the aforementioned clause was reduced from €200m to €120m".

He rejected an offer from Barcelona a year ago and revealed his thought process in a documentary called The Decision. The French attacker announced in May that he was leaving Madrid this summer despite agreeing to fresh five-year terms at the Wanda Metropolitano in June 2018.

The World Cup victor, 28, has signed a five-year deal with the Spanish giants after they activated the £107m clause in his deal with Atleti.

It is likely Atletico's failure to win the UEFA Champions League last season, despite enjoying a comfortable first leg position against favorites Juventus in last season's round of 16, was a key factor in Griezmann's decision.

However, the 2018 World Cup victor spent only one more season with the Rojiblancos before announcing in May that he would be leaving the club this summer.
