Green Bay visits with Jalen Thompson ahead of supplemental draft

Now, headlining the group is offseason acquisition D.J. Swearinger, a soon-to-be 28 year old once strictly known for his thumping style who's slowly become of the league's best all-around safeties, 2019 fifth-round selection Deionte Thompson, who flashed serious range at Alabama last year, Baker, and Jalen Thompson, the supplemental pick.

How does the supplemental draft work?

A team that is awarded a player loses the corresponding draft pick the following year. While they may have benefitted from adding a guy like Thompson, it was sensible for them to avoid the risk and keep their 2020 assets in place, especially given that the team is now lacking a second-round pick in next year's draft. Thompson carries definite intrigue as a hybrid safety/slot corner and figures to get selected before the fourth round on Wednesday. It is not clear if they used their 5th round pick or if they used the one they received from the Dolphins in the trade for Josh Rosen.

Simms ended up going undrafted, which made him a free agent.

With his ability to play in the slot, it would have been easy to see him earning a spot on the 53-man roster and who knows, with 39 college starts under his belt, he could be ready to contribute right away. So if the Panthers draft a player in the 3rd round of the Supplemental Draft tomorrow, they will forfeit their third round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft. Last year two defensive backs were selected in Sam Beal and Adonis Alexander, but this year will not be as interesting.

Meanwhile, and happily so, the 49ers kick off training camp on July 26.

It has been over 20 years since the Green Bay Packers have made a selection in the NFL's Supplemental Draft and despite showing interest in a few of the eligible prospects this year, the organization chose to pass once again.

The Giants delved into the Supplemental Draft twice under general manager George Young. Two years later, they selected Northeast Louisiana defensive back Tito Wooten.
