California Highway Patrol officer killed in Riverside shootout identified

A fourth officer responded and killed the driver during the shootout.

The shooter opened fire, authorities said, killing Moye and wounding two other officers before he was shot to death in hail of gunfire.

A California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer was the victim of violence on Monday in a dramatic scene that occurred on the 215 Freeway, The Los Angeles Times is reporting. According to Riverside Police, a suspect and a CHP officer exchanged gun fire which resulted in the multiple injuries.

A total of three officers were shot.

The slain officer, Andre Moye, initiated the traffic stop during evening rush hour in Riverside on Monday and determined the suspect's truck needed to be impounded, said Scott Parker, assistant chief of CHP Inland Division. The gunman, whose identity has not been released, was also killed, Victor Valley News reported. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco called it a "long and horrific gun battle". Two other CHP officers were injured before the gunfire ended. The other officer suffered only minor injuries.

Dozens of rounds were fired in the melee, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Video after the shooting showed bullet holes in the front windows of two patrol cars and large holes blown in their back windows.

Several motorists were hit with flying glass shards from bullets hitting their vehicle windows, officials said, and were treated by paramedics at the scene.

Moye is survived by his wife, parents, and siblings, the release said.

Flags at the capitol will be flown at half-staff in his honor, the governor's office said.

"Jennifer and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and fellow officers grieving the tragic loss of Officer Moye, who will be remembered for his commitment to serving the Riverside County community and the people of California", Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement.

"She said she heard "pop, pop, pop". gunfire, and then a bullet went through the windshield of her vehicle", Luther said.
