How Bowen Yang's casting is making history

The video surfaced on the same day that the venerable NBC sketch show drew praise for its casting of gay Asian American comedian Bowen Yang.

Saturday Night Live will feature three new cast members when it returns to NBC later this month.

Leslie Jones, who joined the show after it was criticized in 2013 for the absence of an African-American woman among its regular or featured players, is focusing on stand-up and movies and won't be back this season. Fineman was a New Face at the 2018 Just for Laughs Festival, while Gillis earned the billing at the 2019 Just for Laughs Festival. Yang is now the first full time Asian castmember, and he seems like a brilliant choice to help round out the cast.

Yang joined "SNL" last season as a staff writer, and is the host of a podcast called "Las Culturistas".

In the 2018 video, recorded as part of "Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast", Gillis and co-host Matt McCusker rant about Chinatown, its residents and its cuisine, using racial slurs and stereotypes throughout the segment. Besides Eilish, musical guests include Taylor Swift and Camila Cabello.

Fineman, who has been a member of the Groundlings, has credits that include Search Party and Jane the Virgin.

The video appears to be from a podcast recording of Gillis' two-man show, which airs on the Bonfire on Sirius XM.

Looking forward to seeing how these 3 rookies are used when Saturday Night Live returns in two weeks.
