Despite the loss, the US did secure a berth into the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but can only finish at least fifth in the World Cup tournament. The U.S. will clearly have to make some major tweaks to the roster before the Olympics get underway. Knicks guard Frank Ntilikina had 11 points for France.

While Team USA will play Serbia on Thursday for the right to play in the fifth-place game, France will prepare to face Argentina in the semifinals on Friday.

Gobert's overall presence in the second half was decisive, leading Vincent Collet's squad with a double-double of 21 points and 16 rebounds.

France spoiled an impressive performance from Donovan Mitchell, Gobert's National Basketball Association teammate, who led Team USA with 29 points. The U.S. had won two straight World Cups before the defeat.

For the first time in 13 years, there will be a new men's FIBA World Cup champion.

Evan Fournier and Rudy Gobert proved too much for the Americans to handle in their quarterfinal tilt on Wednesday, with the pair combining for 43 points to help France secure an 89-79 win and book a spot in the semifinals. In the other semi-final, Spain will meet the victor of Australia's match with the Czech Republic.
